OBITUARY:

The Demopolis Times, June 30, 1898, page 2:

DOCTOR HENRY WINSTON REESE.

An Old And Distinguished Citizen Of
Marengo County Passes Away.

--------

Dr. H. W. Reese probably the oldest citizen of Marengo county died at his residence near Demopolis on June, 22, 1898 aged about 85 years.
He commenced to practice medicine in the neighborhood of his late residence at the age of 19 years, being a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and also of Jefferson College and pursued his profession for about 20 years. During the last 20 years of his practice he had the largest and most select and profitable practice of any physician in that section of the state.
Since his retirement from active practice, he has devoted himself to his agricultural interests. He was born in Buckingham County, Va., being the only son of Herod and Frances Walker Reese, in 1844 he married Julia Malvina Winn, daughter of Captain Asa B. Winn. He was the father of Henry Winston Reese, Jr., who was a Confederate soldier killed in the Brigade of General E. W. Pettus at Baker's Creek in May 1863 at the age of 16 years, and the Doctor was an ardent and substancial supporter of the late Confederacy. Mrs. Reese died in 1863 and he left surviving him two daughters and one son, Mrs. James Taylor Jones of Demopolis, widow of the late Judge Jones congressman for many years for the first district, and Mrs. Withers, wife of Mr. Henry Withers of Van Dorn, and Mr. Henry F. Reese, who is now practicing law in Selma, and who is at the head of his profession in every respect. The life of Dr. Reese was characterized by his high sense of honesty, justice and philanthropy and he was beloved and is mourned by all who knew him. His life has been an example and service to mankind.
The Times sympathizes with the grief stricken family.
