Notes
General:
There are 2 Moses Carnals. Caroline Co., Virginia records contain references to Moses Carnal, Senr. and to Moses Carnal, Junr. I am going to assume that the younger Moses Carnal is a son of the older one, but he might be some other relative, for example, a nephew. Since Moses Carnal, Senr. died in 1773, any reference after that date is to Moses Carnal, Junr. Some of the citations before 1773 in the notes under Moses Carnal, Senr. may in fact refer to Moses Carnal, Junr. The following citations from Caroline Co. order books are from a series of abstracts of Caroline Co. records by John Frederick Dorman (1732-1770) or from another series of abstracts by Ruth and Sam Sparacio (1765-1787).

On January 12, 1758 Moses Kernal, Jr. and 8 others are ordered to help Moses Karnal in keeping the road in repair. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1755-58, pg 323)

On March 11, 1762 Fanny, a Negro girl to belonging to Moses Carnal, Jr., is adjudged to be 10 years old. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1759-1763, pg 270)

On April 13, 1775 a proposal for a new road pursuant to a petition of William McGehee for leave to turn the Old Road and an order of March 1775 is accepted. It will cross a small corner of Moses Carnal's & Carr McGehee's land and then later will cross a small corner of Carnal's land to Carr McGehee's Path. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1772-1776, pg 593)

On April 8, 1784 a deed from Moses Carnal to Jonathan Terrell is acknowledged by Carnal. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1781-1785, pg 318)

On July 9, 1784 Thomas Jones, executor of John Jones, plaintiff, against Moses Carnal, defendant. Defendant although solemnly called came not. It is ordered that the plaintiff recover £1 13s 4d plus costs. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1781-1785, pg 442)

On June 11, 1785 Patrick Carnal, plaintiff, against John Yarbrough & Thomas Harris, defendants. In debt. Harris did not appear. If he does not appear at next court a judgement will be entered against him and Moses Carnal, the Security for his appearance. "And as to the defendant Yarbrough this suit abates by the Sheriff's return." (Caroline Co. Order Book 1785-1787, pg 67)

Moses Carnall did weaving for John Wright in 1784, and in 1797 there is a suit over a bill for weaving. In John Wright's undated will he refers to the children of his daughter Keziah Carnall. On June 30, 1785 Moses Carnall and John Harris give bond to William Wright, executor of John Wright, dec'd. (CAROLINE COUNTY, VIRGINIA COURT RECORDS 1742-1833 AND MARRIAGES 1787-1810, pg 22)

On November 10, 1801 William Wigglesworth recovered against Moses Carnall and Pleasant Carnall. By January 22, 1808 both Wigglesworth and Carnall are dead.(Ibid, pg 166)

CAROLINE CO., VIRGINIA LAND TAX LIST:

Land tax records are available from 1782 onward. The first list of proprietors is for 1787 and prior to then only transactions are available. In 1786 Moses Cearnal sells 160 acres to Daniel Coleman. He is not in the proprietor list until 1795. In 1794 he buys 495 acres from William Samuel. From 1795 to 1800 he is in the proprietor list with 495 acres worth £127 17/6. In 1801 Moses sells 100 acres to John Woolfolk, and in 1802 he has 395 acres. By 1803 those 395 acres have been increased to 400 and distributed to his widow Keziah (85 acres worth $73.22), Richmond Carnal (80 acres worth $68.90), Pleasant Carnal (80 acres worth $68.90), Achilles Carnal (80 acres worth $68.90) and William Smith (75 acres worth $64.33). Keziah is the owner of 85 acres from 1804 to 1815 and in 1816 her land is transferred to Richmond. Keziah' land is said to be bounded by Pleasant Carnal and to be 13 miles west of the courthouse.

From 1803 to 1816 Keziah Carnal usually has 1 slave over 16 but occasionally none and 1 or 2 horses.

Year after year the Caroline Co. personal tax roll is presented as two distinct lists. Typically all of the Carnals are in just one of the lists. In some years that list is described as being for a certain part of the county. In those cases it is always for St. Margaret's Parish. From time to time 1 or 2 Carnals are in the other list.
