CAROLINE CO. LAND TAX LIST:
Land tax records are available from 1782 onward. The first list of proprietors is for 1787 and prior to then only transactions are available. In 1785 Patrick Cearnal buys 17 acres from Anthony Winston and from 1787 to 1793 he has 17 acres. In 1794 he buys another 60 acres from Anthony Winston and from 1795 to 1797 he has 77 acres. In 1798 he inherits 93 acres from his father's estate and in 1799 he has 170 acres. Then in 1800 he buys 73 acres from James Smith and 100 acres from Dinah Barrius, but from 1801 to 103 he has only 243 acres. In 1804 he buys 105 acres from Henry B. Coleman and in 1805 he sells 8.5 acres to Richard Lowry. From 1806 to 1810 he has 339.5 acres. In 1811 103 acres are added to his total to correct an error (see 1800). From 1812 to 1815 he has 442.5 acres. In 1816 Patrick acquires the 121 acres that his brother Elijah inherited from their father and from 1817 to 1818 he has 563.5 acres. From 1813 onward the tax list says that Patrick's land is bounded by Tarlton W. Chiles and in 1819 Patrick buys 186 acres from Chiles. From 1820 to 1824 he has 749.5 acres. I have not seen any records subsequent to 1824. Patrick's land is said to be 10 miles southwest of the courthouse.
CAROLINE CO. PERSONAL TAX LIST:

WAR OF INDEPENDENCE:
The following is a summary of pension application S8156 for Patrick Carnall:
On October 8, 1832 Patrick Carnall, a resident of Caroline Co., Virginia aged 73 years, appeared before the County Court of Caroline Co. and declared under oath that he was born and educated in Caroline Co. and that he had always lived there. He first entered the Revolutionary War in 1778 as a volunteer and served for 3 months. In 1779 he was again called into military service under a regular draft for 3 months. In 1780 and again in 1781 he was called into service by a regular draft upon the militia of Caroline Co. to serve for 3 months.
In each case he gives the names of his captain and higher level commanders and describes the movements of his company. Relative to 1781 he says
"We marched first to a tavern called Head _____ where we joined the Marquis Lafayette and the forces commanded by him. We proceeded from thence to Richmond and from thence down to little York. We were here routed by the British army commanded by Cornwallis and were compelled to retreat as far back as the County of Culpepper where we joined Genl Wayne and his army. We then turned & pushed [?] the enemy back to little York where Cornwallis and all his army surrendered to us and thus ended my military career."
Patrick Carnall of Caroline Co., Virginia, who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Buckner of the regiment commanded by Col. Mathews in the Virginia line for 9 months was inscribed on the Roll of Virginia at the rate of $30 per annum to commence March 4, 1831.
BIRTH YEAR:
In 1783 he was over 21. Thus he was born in 1762 or before. If his son James was born about 1778, as the tax list suggests, then Patrick was born no later than 1760 and probably somewhat earlier. However, the 1830 census says that he was born between 1760 and 1770. His application for a Revolutionary War pension says that he was 73 in 1832; thus he was born about 1759.
