The following two citations are from a series of abstracts of Caroline Co. records (1765-1787) by Ruth and Sam Sparacio.
On September 9, 1779 William Carnall, plaintiff, and Diana Lyon, defendant, agree to submit all matters in dispute between them to the final determination of 4 named individuals, or any 3 ot them. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1777-1780, pg 192)
On July 12, 1782 William Kernall, Junr., plaintiff, against Diana Lyon, defendant. Because plaintiff failed to prosecute the case, it is dismissed. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1781-1785, pg 110)
CAROLINE CO. LAND TAX LIST:
Land tax records are available from 1782 onward. The first list of proprietors is for 1787 and prior to then only transactions are available. In 1798 William Carnal inherits 92 acres from his father's estate, and from 1799 to 1806 he has 92 acres. In 1807 he acquires 220 acres from Moses Jones and has 312 acres. Until 1818 he has 312 acres, and then in 1819 he sells 100 acres to Moses Jones. From 1820 to 1824 he has 212 acres. I have not seen any records subsequent to 1824. William's land is said to be bounded by Robert Wood and to be 12 miles west or southwest of the courthouse.
CAROLINE CO. PERSONAL TAX LIST:
Personal tax records are available from 1783 onward. William Carnal, Jr. is in the Caroline Co. Personal Tax List from 1784 to 1825. I have not seen tax lists for after 1826. The columns are 1) white males >21 (1783-1787) or white male tithables >16 (1788--), 2) white males 16-21, 3) blacks >16, 4) blacks <16 (1783-1787) or blacks <16 and >12 (1788-1814) or blacks >12 (1815--), 5) horses/mares/colts/mules, 6) cattle, 7) amount of tax, 8) names of tithables >16 in the household other than the person chargeable with the tax.
Before his father's death and until 1803 he is often referred to as "William Carnal, Jr." although sometimes just as "William". Subsequently he is referred as "William Carnal, Sr." or just as "William". There is another William Carnal, Jr.
