HATFIELD:
On page 78 of History of Elizabeth, New Jersey by Rev. Edwin F. Hatfield, published in 1868, the author says that John Hinds and his brother James were "East Enders" from Long Island and that they were sons of James Hinds, "who came over from England to Salem, Mass., as early as 1637, when he was admitted a freeman. He married in 1638, and, at an early day, removed to Southold, L. I., where he died." John was a cooper and came to Elizabeth about ten years earlier than his brother James, who was also a cooper.
James received on July 11, 1677 a warrant "in Right of himself & his wife" for 120 acres of land, on account of which he had a survey of 108 acres upland bounded by Richard Clark, James Emot, and the West brook, and also 12 acres of "meadow in the great Meadows". James purchased on September 4, 1676 from William Looker, then of Jamaica, Long Island, his house, garden, orchard, and house-lot.
(A facsimile copy of the deed at WikiTree describes the buyer as "James Heynes of Elizabeth Towne" and the house lot as being of about 7 acres in Elizabeth Town.)
